The Faculty of Advocates

The Faculty of Advocates ensures that the people of Scotland, regardless of wealth, background or location, have access to the very best independent, objective legal advice. The Faculty has been at the forefront of legal excellence since 1532 and regulates the training and professional practice, conduct and discipline of advocates.

The opportunity

The Faculty is seeking to appoint a Head of Finance who will lead the finance function which supports the Faculty of Advocates Faculty Fund, a Scottish registered charity, its trading subsidiary Faculty Services Limited and related entities including a defined benefits pension scheme.

We are looking for candidates who will provide support for all finance-related strategic, operational and functional activities including:

  • Preparation of annual budgets and cash flows
  • Preparation of accurate and timely monthly financial management information including P&L, Balance sheets and analysis
  • Preparation and submission of tax returns and VAT returns
  • Preparation of year end accounts and working papers for audit
  • Overall responsibility for the accounting system and its accuracy
  • Continual review, recommendation and implementation of financial controls
  • Attendance and participation in Faculty and FSL Board meetings, the Finance Committee and the Audit and Risk Committee
  • Attendance and participation in strategy meetings
  • Support to ad hoc projects and change management initiatives

Candidate requirements

You will be a qualified CA who can demonstrate influence, leadership and change management skills as well as a natural ability to lead and inspire whilst building trust and confidence. The Head of Finance will report to the CEO and will be responsible for working across a broad internal and external stakeholder group.
