About the role
Sustrans is an independent charity making it easier for people to walk and cycle throughout the UK. The national organisation connects people and places, creating more liveable neighbourhoods, transforming the school run and enabling happier, healthier ‘Active Travel’.
The vision and mission of Sustrans has never been more relevant. Across the UK, and particularly in Scotland, government and local authorities are pledging investment and positive action in the promotion of walking and cycling. Sustrans works very closely with Central and Local Government, with schools, universities and businesses to make a real difference to peoples’ lives – improving infrastructure, creating Places for Everyone, changing behaviours and developing a culture of inclusivity for everyone to live and travel happily and safely.
A recent strategic review and restructure within Sustrans has created the opportunity to appoint a National Director for Scotland (DfS). The DfS is a newly created position, designed to provide strategic and inspirational leadership to the team delivering the Sustrans vision across the whole of Scotland.The DfS will lead the delivery of programmes and operational performance internally and provide leadership externally, maintaining and strengthening the profile of Sustrans in Scotland and representing the charity in all strategic relationships with Transport Scotland, Local Authorities and key stakeholders.
Key responsibilities include:
- Establish, lead and deliver Sustrans’ strategy in Scotland
- Lead and develop the Senior Leadership Team
- Manage the delivery budget and resources, meeting financial and performance targets
- Influence decision makers and partners in Active Travel through policy, consultation and thought leadership in the sector
- Manage the core business operations and annual grant funding process with Transport Scotland
- Be the public face of Sustrans in Scotland
The successful candidate will have a track record in building and managing high performing teams in complex organisations, delivery of infrastructure projects and extensive experience of partnering with Central Governments, Local Authorities and a diverse range of stakeholders on policy development.
It is thought that the individual will likely come with a strong understanding of the political landscape, grant management and sponsorship with the political will and network to deliver successful outcomes. A background in Communications, Public Affairs, Urban Planning, Place, People or Communities will also be of interest. Candidates should display a high degree of commerciality and business acumen, diplomacy and emotional intelligence.
