Chief Finance & Operating Officer
About the role
Turcan Connell are trusted and respected legal and tax planning experts, whose approach to providing a personal and tailored service is the secret of its success to date.
The business acts on behalf of individuals, including businesspeople, entrepreneurs and landowners, and also works with a number of select charities, philanthropists and trustees to guide and manage complex legal and financial affairs on their behalf.
With a close-knit team of around 200 people and 24 Partners across offices in Edinburgh, Glasgow and London, Turcan Connell's comprehensive service covers everything required for efficient tax, estate and succession planning, and advises on the many aspects of land and property management and transactions. It also handles the complexities of divorce and family law, employment law and dispute resolution advice as well as providing a range of business law services to our clients.
The Opportunity
Due to the continued success and stage in growth, there is now a requirement to appoint a new Chief Finance & Operating Officer. This newly created position will report into and work closely with the Managing Partner, overseeing all aspects of the firm’s financial success, and important operational functions.
The role will form part of the senior management team and will involve strategically leading and contributing to the financial growth strategies, driving key actions and mitigating risks to maximise the value of the business.
The individual will provide trusted strategic financial advice to the Partnership, leading the finance function and delivering core financial responsibilities ensuring accurate accounting and budgeting, good financial governance, driving value, profitability and improvement strategies and opportunities for growth.
The individual will manage a number of critical business functions within the organisation and be a key part of the management team with direct reports of around 6 from Finance, IT, Risk, Business Development and HR Services.
Candidate Requirements
The successful candidate will have ideally operated in a COO/CFO (or equivalent) level position and have assumed responsibility for broader business functions in a professional and corporate environment. We will also consider candidates stepping up into this position, providing they have managed group services/functions in their career to date.
They will possess most of the following experience and characteristics;
- Professional accountancy qualification (e.g. CA, ACCA, CIMA, ICAEW).
- Degree level education in a relevant field.
- The ability to demonstrate thought leadership and success in financial operations leadership roles, preferably for professional services firms and/or public accounting, although we will consider individuals from various professional backgrounds.
- Proven record of organisational improvement / development as a strategic leader and CFO/COO, reporting to a board.
- Thorough understanding of financial reporting standards.
- Background leading and managing teams to generate a vision, leverage diverse views, establish direction and motivate members to create an atmosphere of trust, and coach employees to encourage development and innovation.
- Aptitude in decision making and problem solving.
