Chair Designate, Finance & General Purposes Committee

About the role

Glasgow Caledonian – the largest and leading modern university in Scotland – is a vibrant, values-led university with campuses in the heart of Glasgow and London.

This year we rocketed into the top 40 universities in the UK in the highly regarded Guardian University Guide, were ranked the UK's 2nd top performing modern university in the inaugural Daily Mail guide and entered the top 50 UK universities in the highly coveted 2024 Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide for the first time. We are the top performing modern University in Scotland in all three guides.

Helping more young people from diverse backgrounds into university is something we are extremely passionate about and at heart, we are a civic university with a global outlook, dedicated to driving positive social change for current and future generations. Guided by our values – integrity, responsibility, creativity and confidence – we work with others to transform the lives of our students and communities we serve.

We are seeking a Chair Designate of the Finance and General Purposes Committee who will also sit on the University Court and who will bring financial scrutiny to the Committee and wider Court to ensure long-term sustainability and growth. The Finance and General Purposes Committee is a critical group that supports the University as it works to meet the strategic goals set by the University’s 2030 strategy.

While not essential, candidates may have an accountancy qualification, but more importantly they will bring senior strategic finance experience which could have been acquired in a CFO, CEO, COO, or Audit Partner role in the commercial sector or in a publicly funded institution. We are looking for candidates with previous experience in a Board/Non Executive position.

Crucially, candidates will be able to demonstrate their commitment to the University’s mission, vision and values and to offer the time and dedication to contribute at meetings, informally, and as an ambassador for the University.

The University is committed to achieving a diverse governing body and in view of the Court’s current lay member balance, applications from women and ethnic minority groups are particularly welcome. All appointments will be made on merit, following a fair and transparent process.

The deadline for consideration is Friday 27th October.
