The modernisation of Scotland to drive growth

- FWB Events

Last week, FWB hosted a dinner and roundtable discussion on the topic of Scotland’s plans for economic growth in partnership with Paul Lawrence, CEO of City of Edinburgh Council, and Stuart Wallace, CEO of Forth Ports Group. The group around the table represented CEOs, Chairs, and Senior Leaders from across all sectors of Scotland’s economy. Paul and Stuart each shared their perspective on the topic as CEOs in their first year in post – Paul from a public sector perspective and Stuart from a private sector perspective.
Paul discussed the argument for more local devolved power in Scotland and drew comparisons to the new arrangements for city regions in parts of England. He also highlighted the need for a strengthening of Scotland’s economic strategy and bold choices for investment and growth in certain areas and sectors. Stuart, meanwhile, emphasised the impact of public policy on decision-making for businesses. He discussed Scotland’s attractiveness for inward investment and the need to emphasise our competitive advantages and address barriers. Both felt that reform of our skills system was critical to the future competitiveness of the public and private sectors.
Thank you to both Paul and Stuart for their thoughtful and thought-provoking contributions in leading this discussion, to the Bonham Hotel for the excellent hospitality and superb setting, and to all our guests for sharing their perspectives as part of the rich discussion.
