The University Court is the governing body of the University and is responsible for overseeing the institution’s activities, agreeing its vision and future strategic direction, and ensuring an environment that allows the University to achieve its objectives and all students and learners to reach their full potential. The Court approves the University strategy, with a particular focus on financial, human resources and estates matters and monitors the University’s performance in achieving its goals.

The Rector’s Assessor is expected to play a full role as a member of the governing body and should exhibit the same skillsets required of all our Court members, i.e. constructive challenge and critical support of the University Executive.  Additionally, the role requires a demonstrable affinity with the student body and the issues experienced by today’s students.  In particular, we would expect a particularly strong understanding of equality, diversity and inclusion matters.  

The ideal candidate will have

Common sense, an open mind and the ability to engage with complex strategic issues are needed, along with the ability to question intelligently.  Training is given as part of the role.  The Rector’s Assessor would also need to make a strong connection with the Rector, who is elected by the student body, and provide updates as and when necessary to the Rector on the work of the Court.  

Rector’s Assessors have often been graduates of the University, enabling them to demonstrate their affinity with students and their understanding of the University. Our ideal candidate lives local to Dundee in order to be able to contribute to the Students’ Association as well as to the Court. 

You should have the time available to attend meetings, which for Court involves a commitment that runs to 10-16 days per year.
