Newlands College Graduation 2019

  • Uncategorized

Student success was once again celebrated at Newlands Junior College.

The college which was set up as a 5 year project by Jim McColl to support students who have disengaged from the secondary education system. As a result of the project 134 graduates have gone on to positive destinations in further education, apprenticeships and directly into employment.

One of the students who graduated on Friday transformed his attendance record from zero at his secondary school to 100% at Newlands. This is testament to the great work which has been done by all the teaching and support staff and the vision of some secondary school teachers who referred students to Newlands.

“ …it’s very sad that Newlands has come to the end of its project time frame and that the college is now closing. Hopefully the lessons will not be lost and will be applied in the Scottish education system. There is group of students who don’t do well in the mainstream but on the evidence of what has been achieved by Newlands clearly prosper when an an alternative approach is adopted” commented Scott Black who is a Trustee of Newlands Junior College.
